This tutorial shows you how to create and start a Oracle Big Data Cloud Service- Compute Edition cluster.

Approximately 10 minutes (not including wait time for service activations and provisioning).

Background

Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition combines open source technologies such as Apache Spark and Apache Hadoop to deliver a complete Big Data platform for running and managing Big Data Analytics applications.

You use the Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition: Create Service wizard to create an Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition cluster in the cloud.

Note: This tutorial does not instruct you on how to work with your on-premises Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition installation.

Getting your Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition Subscription

Here are the steps to subscribe and start using Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition.

  1. You order a Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition subscription.

  2. After the payload is created, you receive an email to complete your order. You complete the order by clicking the Complete My Order button within the email. You enter details for the Account Administrator, Identity Domain (optional), Service Name, and Service Administrator, and click Activate.

  3. When the service is activated, you receive another email that contains information about accessing your service, your username, temporary password, My Services URL, and the Admin Console URL. You access My Services page by clicking the Service Console URL from within the email.

  4. You sign in to the Cloud Service by entering your identity domain, username, and password. You proceed to the Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition: Services page.

  5. You create a Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition cluster.

  6. You confirm that your cluster appears in the Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition: Services page.

  1. Click the Service Console URL in your Welcome email.

Creating an Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition Cluster

In this section, you create a Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition cluster.

Configuring your Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition Cluster

  1. Click the Create Service button in the Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition: Services page.

  2. Enter a Service Name of your choice, provide a Service Description (optional), and select the metering frequency for billing the resources used by this cluster. Click Next > to navigate to the Service Details Page.

  3. Perform the following steps In the Cluster Configuration section of the Service Details Page:

    1. Number of Nodes: Enter the total number of nodes to be allocated to the cluster.

    2. Compute Shape: From the drop-down list, select the number of Oracle Compute Units (OCPUs) and amount of memory (RAM) that you want to assign for each compute node of the new cluster.
    3. Usable HDFS Storage(GB): Enter the amount of storage in GB for HDFS. The Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition uses a replication factor of 2 for HDFS. Hence the Usable HDFS Storage will roughly be half of the total allocated storage.
    4. Queue Profile: Select how you want to manage the queues and workload. Preemption Off indicates that Jobs can't consume more resources than a specific queue allows. Preemption On indicates that Jobs can consume more resources than a queue allows.

  4. Perform the following steps In the Credentials section of the Service Details Page:

    1. Provide a public key. To associate your public key with this cluster, click the Edit button next to the SSH Public Key field. You have three options to choose from:

      • Key File Name: Browse and select a file containing your SSH public key.
      • Key Value: Copy and paste your SSH public key value into the provided field.
      • Create a New Key: Have the wizard create a public/private key pair for you.

      Choose the option of your choice and click Enter.

    2. Administrative User: Enter the user name of the Big Data Cluster Console and REST APIs user.
    3. Password: Enter a password for the administrative user.
    4. Confirm Password: Re-enter a password for the administrative user.

  5. Perform the following steps In the Cloud Storage Credentials section of the Service Details Page:

    1. Cloud Storage Container: Enter the name of the Oracle Storage Cloud Service container which is to be associated with this cluster.
    2. Username: Enter the user name of an Oracle Cloud user who has access to the container specified in Cloud Storage Container.
    3. Password: Enter the password associated with the Cloud Storage user name.
    4. Create Cloud Storage Container: Select this option if you do not have an Oracle Storage Cloud Service container or if you do not want to reuse your existing Oracle Storage Cloud Service containers. Specify the above credentials and then select Create Cloud Storage Container check box to create a new Oracle Storage Cloud Service container.

  6. In the Associations section, select Cloud Services that you want to associate with your new Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition cluster and click Next >.

Confirming your Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition Cluster Definition

  1. The Confirmation page displays a summary of your previous selections. Review them and click Create > to create an Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition cluster. If you want to edit or update a field, click the < Previous button to navigate back to the Service Details page.

  2. After clicking Create >, your new Oracle Big Data Cloud Service - Compute Edition cluster will be listed in the the Services page with a status of "Creating service..." until the cluster creation is completed. Cluster creation can take more than 30 minutes.
