For you this week:
We were onsite at Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco this week, getting you an inside look at the big news, including a raft of database innovations announced by Larry Ellison, and a new free version of the autonomous database. Plus we get to know the experts who can make a complex dance of technology, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), into tangible demos for students and customers.

Larry Ellison: The Many Reasons You Need an Autonomous Cloud
Oracle’s Larry Ellison laid out his vision for the “world’s first truly autonomous cloud,” a vision that takes the concept behind trends such as self-driving cars and planes and applies it to cloud computing. The result is Oracle database, infrastructure, and other IT services that are more secure, reliable, flexible, and cost-efficient than competing cloud services. More from his OpenWorld keynote.
Free Database
Always Free Autonomous Database
After detailing new tech in the Oracle Autonomous Database, Oracle’s Larry Ellison ended his keynote at OpenWorld with a kicker: Starting immediately, Oracle would offer a free version of its revolutionary autonomous database for people to build, learn, and explore on Oracle Cloud. “So, everybody should leave now, open your laptop, log on, and give it a try,” Ellison said. Four more innovations he discussed.

How Experience Engineers Make the Cloud Tangible
Programming students recently oohed and aahed over the “factory of the future” demo Oracle IoT architect Jasper Potts created with sensors and augmented reality technologies, complete with an X-ray view of the factory on an iPad. Product demos might seem routine, but it takes skilled professionals and technology veterans to shrink an IoT use case down to an individual perspective.

Now You Can Monitor Autonomous Databases with Oracle Enterprise Manager
At a recent Customer Advisory Board meeting, Oracle Enterprise Manager power users shared their complex use cases and reacted to product roadmaps for Oracle’s flagship IT monitoring and management tool. One clear message? Customers want to leverage Oracle Autonomous Database as part of their broader database fleets, and they’re looking to Enterprise Manager to make things work seamlessly.
