Four Technology Shifts Reshaping the Enterprise Database |
When it comes to database trends, Oracle’s goal is to take “good ideas and make them better,” said Oracle’s Juan Loaiza at Oracle OpenWorld. Oracle saw the opportunity to bring the trend of “self-driving” to its cloud-based database, because “we’ve spent so many years developing [and] automating all the features” that would need to work together in an autonomous database, Loaiza said. Three more trends. |

Textron’s Speedy Launch to the Cloud |
“It was a whirlwind,” says Kelli Gudz, Textron’s senior finance systems manager, recalling how the American industrial conglomerate moved from an ERP system that was more than 20 years old to Oracle Financials Cloud in just 14 weeks. “When Oracle told us that that time frame was the standard, we were like, ‘Really? This can’t be done.’” But it could, and even better: Textron’s corporate office was able to stay operational during the change. |

Visualizing New Vaccines with the Cloud |
Researchers equipped with high-performance cloud computing are proposing using a lab-produced protein molecule that can act as a delivery system for future vaccines against the mosquito-borne illness chikungunya. The protein can be stored for weeks at warm temperatures, making it easier to ship in regions where lack of refrigeration is an obstacle, and could contribute to efforts to thwart tropical viruses. |
