Phiten boosts database performance 40X with Oracle
The health-focused Japanese manufacturer migrated essential databases to Oracle Base Database Service, dramatically increasing efficiency.

Business challenges
Phiten develops and sells a wide variety of products to support health, ranging from body care products to sportswear, supplements, beauty aids, and more. The company has more than 4 million registered users and has patented more than 100 unique technologies worldwide.
While Phiten’s business continues to grow, the company expanded from just specialty shops to more than 10,000 selling locations, including retail stores, clinics, salons, drugstores, and ecommerce sites.
The data that Phiten had previously handled on-premises, such as stocking, inventory, and customer information, also grew along with the business. But the company wasn’t getting the performance it was looking for from the massive amount of data that followed its expansion. Phiten needed improvements in its sales management system to further increase its growth and operational efficiency.
At present, we’ve only got our sales management system database on Oracle Database Cloud Service, but we’re planning to switch our entire IT system over to the cloud. We’re looking into moving all of that, even the applications, to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
Why Phiten Chose Oracle
After comparing Oracle to other major cloud offerings like AWS, Phiten realized that with Oracle Database Cloud Service, running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure,
it could get the performance it needed at half the cost. Additionally, the company liked the ability to connect from a closed network, the presence of domestic servers, and performance that matched up with the cost.
Another big selling point was the peace of mind in knowing that Oracle Cloud would allow Phiten to increase IOPS along with storage in the event of any future data increases.
At about the same time that Phiten was investigating its options, Oracle opened a new data region in Osaka, Japan. With Phiten’s office in the Kansai area, the company could get low-latency access.
Results
After migrating from an on-premises Oracle Database Standard Edition environment to Oracle Database Enterprise Edition High Performance, Phiten saw processing performance speeds that were 40 times faster. The data import process for orders received, which had previously taken 10 minutes, dropped to a mere 15 seconds. And the creation of electronic transfer slips was now 12 times more efficient, down to just 10 minutes from 2 hours, allowing the company to greatly reduce the time needed for processing.
While Phiten had previously completed data updating after hours, due to the load it placed on the system, the huge leap in processing performance allowed the company to all but eliminate after-hours work. It also helped Phiten reduce the amount of overtime needed for other high-load operations that were previously only manageable after hours or on holidays.
Additionally, the company improved its user experience, with its points program updates happening in real time rather than taking two weeks. Also, its aggregation reports are now created daily and weekly instead of monthly.
