Port of Fujairah eliminates downtime with Oracle Engineered Systems
Port of Fujairah Boosts Productivity by Hosting Business-Critical Applications on Oracle Engineered Systems.
Port of Fujairah is a port and terminal operator in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), approximately 70 nautical miles from the Straits of Hormuz. It provides a range of services including general cargo, bulk cargo, wet bulk cargo, port facilities for small supply craft users and agents, container activity, and other port services. With its location at the crossroads of shipping lines between East and West, the Port of Fujairah is a hub for activities aimed toward the markets of the Indian sub-continent and East Africa.
Port of Fujairah’s IT hardware hosting Oracle E-Business Suite was becoming increasingly outdated, affecting the performance and availability of the organization’s key business applications. It deployed Oracle Database Appliance to increase the power of its infrastructure, provide scalability, and introduce a disaster recovery (DR) solution.
“With Oracle Database Appliance, we improved the performance and availability of business applications that are critical to smoothly run our port and introduced a disaster recovery solution. In addition, we have dramatically cut reporting time and lowered our total cost of ownership.”
Business challenges
- Improve performance of all major software—including a range of Oracle E-Business Suite modules and a third-party niche application managing the port’s services and activities—by replacing outdated hardware platform that was causing end user issues
- Raise the efficiency of business support processes and enhance decision making by reducing the time to run a variety of activity and financial reports across the Port of Fujairah’s companies and individual services
- Implement a DR solution to avoid downtime in the fast-paced shipping and transportation sectors while also reducing the cost of hardware ownership
- Ensure high availability of database and business applications with a powerful infrastructure that can be rapidly and economically scaled, when needed
We selected Oracle Database Appliance as it is a proven, complete solution-in-a-box for running Oracle workloads. To achieve the same performance on other hardware, we would have to purchase many more licenses. With Oracle, we can also easily scale up when we need to expand our Port’s services.
Results
- Improved productivity and user satisfaction across the Port’s business support functions by using Oracle Database Appliance to optimize the performance of a comprehensive range of Oracle E-Business Suite modules used by 80 finance, HR, and procurement employees—replacing outdated HP Itanium rx2660 servers running UNIX
- Reduced the time to run complex general ledger reports from 10 hours to a few minutes, enabling managers to make business and financial decisions a full day earlier
- Improved HR department efficiency by reducing payroll processing time for more than 800 multifunctional employees from 2 hours to just a few minutes
- Eliminated previous system downtime and associated business impacts and user complaints by deploying a second Oracle Database Appliance as a disaster recovery solution in a box
- Reduced total cost of ownership significantly with Oracle Database Appliance’s ability to deliver capacity on demand, increasing capacity without replacing the hardware, and achieving considerable savings in licensing costs
- Enhanced business continuity of the Port’s operations by implementing a high availability architecture for both application and database, leveraging the features of Oracle Real Application Clusters and Oracle Database Appliance
- Provided hardware capacity to migrate the Port’s niche business application to a single Oracle Database Appliance, facilitating the anticipated consolidation of the group’s IT infrastructure
