What is the Oracle and Google Cloud partnership?

  • The Oracle and Google Cloud partnership allows customers to combine Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Google Cloud technologies to help accelerate their application migrations and modernization. There will be two joint offerings: Oracle Interconnect for Google Cloud and Oracle Database@Google Cloud. Read the partnership announcement.
  • Oracle Interconnect for Google Cloud is now generally available. Interoperability is via a dedicated private connection, and customers use single sign-on (SSO) credentials via federated identity to access Oracle and Google Cloud resources. Collaborative technical support is provided by both Oracle and Google Cloud.
  • Oracle Database@Google Cloud will be available later in 2024. Interoperability will be via Oracle database services on OCI, managed by Oracle and colocated in Google Cloud data centers.

Who can use the interconnect between OCI and Google Cloud?

Any customer with an Oracle Cloud account and a Google Cloud subscription can use the interconnect. You don’t need to sign any new or additional contracts to use the service.

How do I provision it?

The service is available on the Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure consoles. Follow the instructions in the Oracle Interconnect for Google Cloud documentation to configure the service on both consoles to bring up the interconnection.

How do I connect Oracle Interconnect for Google Cloud?

Oracle Interconnect for Google Cloud is now generally available in 11 cloud regions. Read this blog post for information on how to connect the service to an OCI virtual cloud network (VCN) and Google Cloud Virtual Private Cloud (VPC).

In what OCI and Google Cloud regions is the interconnect available?

Oracle Interconnect for Google Cloud is now available in the Oracle Cloud and Google Cloud regions listed on the product overview page. Future expansion is planned.

What are common uses for the interconnect?

There are several common uses, including the following:

  • Migrate and run full-stack applications across OCI and Google Cloud. Run full-stack applications on OCI and full-stack applications on Google Cloud that interoperate and share data.
  • Migrate and run split-stack applications across OCI and Google Cloud. Interoperate complementary services across the clouds—for example, analytics on Google Cloud using OCI database services.
  • Build modern, cloud native applications using PaaS services. Interoperate complementary services across the clouds—for example, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Container Engine for Kubernetes and Google Spanner.
  • Integrate SaaS apps between Google Cloud and OCI. Run SaaS apps on OCI, such as Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP or the Oracle Retail Merchandising Cloud Services Suite, and integrate with mobile apps on Google Firestore.

How much bandwidth can I provision to interconnect my OCI and Google Cloud environments?

The interconnect supports the following bandwidth shapes: 1, 5, 10, 20, and 50 Gb/sec.

What’s the difference between Oracle Interconnect for Google Cloud and Google Cross-Cloud Interconnect?

Oracle Interconnect for Google Cloud is a partner-based connection that’s quick to set up and easy to use. It has network redundancy built in, and the metered data egress fees are waived. Google and Oracle manage the connectivity between the two services and work together to resolve any issues that may come up.

The existing Google Cross-Cloud Interconnect lets customers establish a dedicated circuit between Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) FastConnect directly. This interconnection is more self-service. The trade-off is that the physical interconnection is fully dedicated to the customer.

Billing and economics

Are there any costs associated with the interconnect?

Customers use Google Cloud Partner Interconnect and OCI FastConnect to establish private connections between the clouds. Customers incur the published port charges for these two services. Oracle and Google Cloud won’t charge for data ingress or egress over FastConnect and Partner Interconnect, respectively.

How am I billed for charges?

You’ll continue to get your invoices and bills from Google Cloud and Oracle through existing processes.

Operation, support, and security

Is the connection between OCI and Google Cloud across the internet?

No, the interconnect doesn’t use the internet. It’s a private, dedicated connection.

Is the traffic between OCI and Google Cloud encrypted?

No, the traffic isn’t encrypted. However, the connection is private and dedicated. Customers can use third-party software to inspect or encrypt the traffic to help meet additional security and/or compliance requirements.

How much round-trip latency is there between OCI and Google Cloud?

The interconnect offers a fast, low-latency connection, suitable for demanding production workloads. The round-trip latency is two milliseconds or less. The exact latency numbers will vary depending on the region and how the applications are deployed. Each customer should test the latency with their own applications.

Do I need to use a third-party service provider to connect my OCI and Google Cloud environments?

No, OCI and Google Cloud have already directly connected their infrastructure. Therefore, you can connect without using a third-party service provider.

What are the service level agreements (SLAs) associated with the interconnect?

The interconnect is covered through availability SLAs for OCI FastConnect (OCI FastConnect SLAs (PDF)) and Google Cloud Partner Interconnect (Google Cloud Partner Interconnect SLAs).

What’s the support model for Oracle Interconnect for Google Cloud?

You can create technical support requests directly with Oracle or Google Cloud. Oracle and Google Cloud have developed a joint support model using existing support processes to help ensure rapid response and resolution.
