World leader in swine genetics uses Oracle Base Database Service on OCI for global research
Utrecht—April 16, 2024Oracle announced today that Topigs Norsvin, a leading provider of swine genetic research and consulting, will use Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) for its global research and breeding operations. Topigs Norsvin chose OCI because of its excellent performance, high availability and low costs. This will allow the company to further scale up its operations and incorporate the integration of new technologies, such as AI and Machine Learning, into its research processes.
Topigs Norsvin is active in more than 50 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The company collects performance and production data from individual pigs, including fertility, meat quality, strength, disease resistance and feed efficiency, and uses this for the selection and breeding of pigs, so that pig farmers always have a better generation of pigs in their stables. The company uses a database containing the data of more than 55 million individual animals for breeding and its extensive research program.
With its breeding and research activities, Topigs Norsvin helps improve the productivity and sustainability of pig farming, as well as animal welfare. The work affects the production of more than 176 million pigs per year.
Topigs Norsvin uses OCI to run research systems, including its central research database running on Oracle Base Database Service, as well as adjacent and custom Oracle APEX applications that support data analysis across the company's five research platforms: genetics and genomics, food and feed efficiency, health and animal welfare, meat and carcass quality and reproduction.
“Our migration to Oracle Base Database Service on OCI represents a step change in the way we conduct our research and breeding activities,” said Els van Eekelen, Manager IT Breeding & Genetics at Topigs Norsvin. “OCI offers us a powerful platform for performing advanced data analyses. It gives us tools to scale quickly, innovate our processes and deliver services to our customers faster. We are already seeing the impact of OCI on our operations, including better service performance, greater operational flexibility and scalability.”
By migrating to OCI, Topigs Norsvin has access to flexible, secure and powerful computing power, that allows it to reduce the latency of analytics applications and significantly improve the turnaround time of research and valuation. Furthermore, OCI enables Topigs Norsvin to reduce operational costs and increase IT efficiency and sustainability.
“Topigs Norsvin's work has a huge impact on a fast-growing global industry. Their needs are evolving rapidly – in terms of growth and scale, but especially around the adoption of new technologies to expand work, modernize processes and build capacity,” said Wilfred Scholman, Country Leader of Oracle in the Netherlands. “We are excited to deliver the power and flexibility of Oracle Base Database Service on OCI to support Topigs Norsvin as they scale and deliver their next generation research services. With OCI, Topigs Norsvin can quickly increase services to its customers.”
The implementation is managed by Transfer Solutions, a member of the Oracle Partner Network.
