JSL taps OCI to enhance IT infrastructure

As Brazil's leading road logistics company, JSL boasts an extensive portfolio of industry services, including cargo transportation, commodity logistics, chartering, fleet management with labor, and urban warehousing and distribution. Amidst rapid expansion, JSL recognized that its IT environment needed to approve applications and microservices quickly. The company also wanted to introduce innovative services to better support truck drivers, who are the backbone of its business.
Why JSL chose Oracle
JSL opted for OCI Kubernetes Engine (OKE) to generate more environments and expedite application testing. As an open source product, Kubernetes provided lower costs compared to competitors and offered greater flexibility for microservices development, two critical factors for JSL.
The company also selected the Oracle Digital Assistant to integrate into its driver assistance application. Using AI, Oracle Digital Assistant can process vast amounts of data generated by truck telemetry to create conversational experiences with truck drivers, which would aid in troubleshooting road-related issues and suggesting suitable freight and cargo for trucks in transit, thus boosting the drivers’ earnings.
Results
After implementing Kubernetes, JSL gained access to all telemetry data within its IT environment via a real-time dashboard. This helped reduce issue resolution time from up to 3 hours to just 10 minutes. Beyond speed, JSL also decreased the number of staff involved in issue resolution, from as many as six people to an average of two. It also increased infrastructure availability from 80% to 99%.
OKE’s container technology also helped JSL to optimize its infrastructure-related applications, including microservices and nanoservices, to maximize resource use through consumption-based pricing. This brought a significant reduction in CPU and memory usage, and reduced spending on servers, antivirus, and licenses, among other items. Consequently, the company reduced IT costs by 70%.
Meanwhile, the company’s Active Tower application uses Oracle Digital Assistant to handle all communication with drivers on the road. In its initial phase, the digital assistant employs AI to assist professionals in addressing vehicle maintenance issues, such as suggesting nearby gas stations and mechanics. In a second phase, JSL aims to cut down on the frequency of empty returns, which occur when a trucker returns to base without any cargo, a phenomenon that accounts for up to 30% idle time in this sector. With Oracle Digital Assistant, the Active Tower app can match cargo demands from companies with idle truck drivers after completing a freight shipment, using AI to propose suitable loads based on the truck's profile, and send targeted notifications aligned with the vehicle model. Instead of inundating professionals with irrelevant push notifications, the app sends job offers tailored to the vehicle model, increasing the likelihood of acceptance.
