Enterprise identity management/single sign-on solution changes are typically complex, and their impact is highly visible. With Oracle's prescriptive guidance and support, we were able to seamlessly upgrade and migrate our solution to the cloud as an in-house project.

Business challenges

One of the world’s largest office furniture makers, HNI offers brands including Allsteel, HON, and Gunlocke to meet the work style and budget for every office. With 7,700 employees worldwide, providing efficient and secure access to enterprise systems such as Oracle E-Business Suite is essential to HNI. As part of the upgrade to IAM 12c, the company decided to migrate its identity and access management to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), looking to simplify its infrastructure since it already ran many applications on OCI. HNI wanted to complete the cloud migration and database upgrade as an in-house IT project.

Engaging with the Oracle PUMA team gave us the support we needed to confidently complete our upgrade. The PUMA team met with us and provided solutions to our challenges throughout the upgrade process.

Why HNI Corporation Chose Oracle

The furniture maker upgraded to Oracle Identity and Access Management (IAM) 12c, running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). The identity solution included Oracle Internet Directory, Oracle Access Manager, and Oracle Identity Governance.

HNI has been a longtime Oracle customer and uses many Oracle technologies to help support employees and customers globally. The decision to upgrade to 12c and migrate to OCI was based on supportability, positive IAM and OCI experiences, and a strong relationship with the Oracle team.

Results

The company uses Oracle Identity Manager and Oracle Access Manager to administer user identities and access to several applications, such as E-Business Suite, providing a simplified user experience through a single sign-on approach. HNI also uses Oracle Access Management and Oracle Internet Directory to support external Oracle and third-party applications.

The team completed the migration to OCI and the upgrade to 12c as an in-house IT project. Oracle offered guidance, tools, and close collaboration through the Proactive Upgrade and Migration Assistance (PUMA) team, which is part of the Oracle IAM Upgrade Factory.

With 3,000 internal and thousands more external users, the HNI Identity team was tasked with upgrading to IAM 12c with minimal impact to the business and to navigate through the final stages of the upgrade without impacting the timelines of other ongoing internal projects. The company had a large project that entailed moving a business entity from a legacy system to its Oracle ERP system. The company took advantage of Oracle Integration to connect the applications and experienced no disruptions during the upgrade.

Bringing Oracle IAM into OCI provided significant value. “It gave us less fragility in our overall process,” says Tingle. “If we ever had an issue connecting from our network, we’d still be able to access our company site through OCI. The time and investment was well worth it.”
