Business challenges

Coronado Global Resources (ASX: CRN) is a leading international producer of metallurgical coal, an essential element in steel production. The company’s coals, transformed in the steelmaking process, support the manufacture of everyday steel-based products, including renewable energy infrastructure, that enrich lives around the world.

Coronado’s legacy ERP system in Australia provided the lifeblood of information about the business, with around 2,000 workers and many local businesses and communities depending on the operation. But the on-premises system created roadblocks as the company worked to improve processes, data accuracy, and streamline end-to-end business activity. The system required manually extracting and sorting data from disparate sources before publishing for financial reporting.

Coronado faced a decision: whether to upgrade its on-premises ERP system and keep the ongoing support costs, or migrate to a cloud system for ERP. At the same time, it was considering a similar choice for human capital management (HCM) and supply chain management (SCM). Coronado wanted to integrate disparate IT infrastructure and services to form a unified IT system.

Why Coronado chose Oracle

Coronado decided to move to Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP, HCM, and SCM for its Australian business. Coronado assessed multiple cloud providers against its business needs, which span every department as well as contractors and suppliers. The company chose a suite of Oracle Cloud Applications, plus Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) services and Oracle Integration, to gain functional depth, innovative features, and system scalability. Having one system for its strategic back office on a single cloud platform was a driving force for selecting Oracle Cloud.

Results

After moving to Oracle Cloud Applications, in addition to getting more functionality, Coronado lowered costs significantly because it no longer faced high hardware and application management expenses from its legacy on-premises system. Also, a new supplier portal in Oracle Cloud ERP streamlined operations, enabling purchasing teams to update supplier information efficiently and quickly.

Coronado also digitized its HCM processes, allowing employees to submit absences, access their HR documents, and initiate HR requests through a self-service portal, saving the company many hours of administrative HR tasks.

As a listed Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) company that is also incorporated in the U.S., Coronado is required to prepare  financial compliance information to support Sarbanes–Oxley reporting and governance standards, which are provided within Oracle Cloud ERP.

Using Oracle Integration, Coronado created nearly 20 integrations across multiple strategic back-office systems. Many of these came as standard connectors or adapters available within Oracle Integration to connect to third-party applications.

The company has considerable plans to use the cloud for future innovation. One of the compelling benefits of the Oracle Cloud application suite is that it is constantly adding capabilities with quarterly feature releases. This gives Coronado the ability to continually enhance, automate, and streamline business functions.

Partners

Coronado worked with Accenture for its end-to-end Oracle Cloud ERP and Oracle Cloud SCM implementation, including one of the first implementations of Oracle Maintenance Cloud in the world and collaborated with Deloitte for its HCM transformation.
