Accelerate your retail software projects with the Retail Reference Model

Kristy Mills, Senior Marketing Manager, Oracle Retail | April 26, 2023

Accelerating your implementation and maximizing the value you derive from your retail solutions is something we at Oracle Retail heavily invest in.

Over the past ten years, we have dedicated significant time and resources to building the Oracle Retail Reference Model (RRM): a tool that is free to our customers and partners, based on nearly 6,000 implementations across 96 countries. The RRM grants access to hundreds of detailed retail business process workflows and answers the “big picture” questions of how systems and business units fit together, for the benefit of both executives and architects.

The Retail Reference Model has three components: Retail Business Process Flows, Retail Technical Models, and the Retail Glossary.

What's new in the Retail Reference Model?

Hear how John Lewis leverages the Retail Reference Model.

Customers and partners can access retail best practices and information on the latest RRM components on My Oracle Support:

  • Retail Business Process Flows: process flow content was updated in the following solution areas Customer and Consumer Services, Merchandise Foundation, Inventory Management, and Warehouse Management,
  • Retail Technical Models: 2 new process flows, 25 existing process flows updated, 4 existing process flows updated,
  • Retail Glossary: terms were updated within the following solution areas Retail Merchandising, XStore POS.

How do customers benefit from the Retail Reference Model?

John Lewis, a leading fashion, home, and technology department store retailer in the UK, found the RRM invaluable in simplifying documentation, articulating business processes, and challenging potential modifications while implementing Oracle Retail merchandising, stores, and supply chain solutions.

More on the Retail Reference Model

To accelerate your projects in the retail industry we recommend you consider using the RRM resources as a starting point during implementation.

Benefits of the RRM:

  • Simplify the documentation process
  • Use as a guide during high-level design workshops
  • Help identify and align ‘to-be’ business processes
  • Challenge potential modifications, allowing them to focus on solutions that have real business benefits
  • Reduce documentation time by mapping the RRM to existing business process models
  • Provide organized content enabling the adoption of best business practices that both business and technical teams find very valuable

Components:

  • The Retail Business Process Flows: collection of established, industry-leading business processes to guide retailers and implementers on the use of Oracle applications.
  • The Retail Technical Models: collection of artifacts that describe the different views of Oracle Retail’s solution offerings, including contextual models, integration models, and deployment models.
  • The Retail Glossary: source for defining terms, metrics, and measures used by retailers.

The RRM was developed to mitigate such issues, which can impede successful and timely implementations. We’ve harnessed the power of all this combined knowledge for the benefit of our customers and partner community.
