HKBU builds a data lakehouse on OCI to enhance the user experience
Hong Kong Baptist University enjoys a unified data platform and faster report creation with Oracle Analytics and Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse.
“With OCI’s data management and data lakehouse capabilities, we can now ensure a single source of truth and offer an enhanced user experience . This new data platform brings higher operational efficiencies to our university.”
Business challenges
Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is a leading research-led liberal arts university in Asia. It is committed to providing a comprehensive education, innovative research, and scientific and technological literacy in society.
Recognizing the importance of data-driven decision-making for operational excellence and efficiency, HKBU identified the need for improved data management automation and the establishment of a reliable single source of truth.
In the past, technical staff faced challenges in connecting structured and unstructured data from various disparate sources, devices, and channels. Users across different departments also encountered time-consuming processes in data provisioning and cleansing to generate reports for analysis.
By centralizing data as a single source in Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse, HKBU has the capability to present data conveniently in a dashboard format.
Why HKBU chose Oracle
After an extensive evaluation, HKBU decided to adopt Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) for its comprehensive end-to-end capabilities. It also selected Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse to optimize data lakehouse functionality, allowing for swift discovery of business insights through machine learning models and generation of forecast, trends, and predictions, such as admission offer acceptance prediction. Additionally, HKBU plans to deploy Oracle Analytics to address its analytics process, including data ingestion, modeling, preparation, enrichment, and visualization.
Results
By establishing an enterprise-wide data platform and governance foundation on the cloud, HKBU successfully integrated unstructured data in the data lake with the comprehensive management features and tools provided by data warehouses. Technical staffers benefit from the advanced capabilities of ML for automating crucial tasks such as database tuning, scaling, and patching.
With this unified data platform, HKBU aims to achieve significant efficiency improvements by generating reports in a timely manner. Faculties and administrative departments would be able to use this modern and powerful platform to analyze data, gain insights, and make more accurate predictions.
HKBU gathered data from various sources supporting student admissions, recruitment, enrolment, and progress. The university plans to further employ data visualization and dashboards to study student profiles, allowing for better prediction capabilities. For example, demographic information can assist in predicting the acceptance rate of admissions offers, helping HKBU to plan for future admissions cycles.
