Business challenges

Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) provides electric, gas, water, and wastewater services to nearly half a million customers in eastern Tennessee. KUB needed an advanced distribution management system (ADMS) to leverage both network and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) data to meet the unique needs of a combination utility company.

Why KUB chose Oracle

KUB chose Oracle Utilities Network Management System (NMS) for its scalable and modular approach. Oracle Utilities NMS is readily adaptable for all types of utility networks—including electric, gas, water, and wastewater—and is proven to handle large and increasing amounts of network and AMI data, which KUB’s legacy outage management system (OMS) was unable to do. Moreover, it could be configured to manage not just electric distribution grids, but gas and water network operations as well.

Results

The implementation of Oracle Utilities NMS and the use of both outage and distribution management modules allow KUB operators to perform feeder-level switching and outage management. One of the critical elements of the implementation was the seamless integration of homegrown web and mobile systems. This has provided both control room operators and field crews with real-time, cross-commodity network information, improving situational awareness and safety as well as operational responsiveness and flexibility for KUB’s workforce.

Overall, the system has performed well since the initial implementation phase, helping KUB to manage through several heavy summer and winter storms without any issues.
