The pressure we had was to bring a better user experience to our employees and line managers because having different tools was making their work very complicated. We love that the Oracle solution is a complete suite that fits all the different processes that we need to deliver, like payroll, onboarding, and performance evaluation.

Business challenges

As a communications and IT company with more than 80,000 employees in 130 countries, Nokia serves most industries, from manufacturing to healthcare to government. Nokia continues to grow through acquisitions of optical networks and service providers. With every acquisition comes a new human resources system and process, along with all the new employees.

“When you acquire a company, you also acquire the complexity of digital tooling,” says Jonny Pellegrino, head of technology and digital transformation at Nokia. As a result, the company found itself using 14 software tools to manage different HR functions, creating confusion among employees, line managers, and executives. Nokia turned to Oracle Fusion Cloud Human Capital Management (HCM) to help it replace the outdated HR environment and provide a more appealing and globally consistent experience for employees and managers across regions.

Why Nokia chose Oracle

After considering several HR application providers, Nokia selected Oracle Fusion Cloud HCM for its ability to consolidate the company’s 14 separate human resources applications on the cloud. Nokia was drawn to Oracle’s  complete suite to help the company improve many of its HR processes, including payroll, onboarding, and performance evaluations. Nokia considered Oracle Cloud HCM cost-effective, and it valued the commitment of Oracle Customer Success Services to help the company achieve a successful implementation. “With such a massive transformation program, Oracle was really ready to listen to us, to be open, and to advise us with the best partnership,” says Pellegrino.

Results

After deploying Oracle Fusion Cloud HCM, Nokia consolidated 14 different human resources tools on the cloud, giving its 80,000 workers a central location for HR services. The solution replaced Nokia’s on-premises systems that previously operated at business unit or country level. In addition, it streamlined more than 100 HR processes in one integrated HR management system, which the company named NokiaME. This single access point for employees and managers saves them time getting information or taking actions such as completing a performance review. The built-in guidance on the tool also helps employees use Oracle Cloud HCM without extra training.

Next, the implementation of Oracle Cloud HCM will help Nokia redesign processes, such as recruiting and onboarding. The company also has plans to use Oracle AI capabilities. “We have a high expectation that the artificial intelligence capabilities will help us improve the efficiency and the efficacity of HCM processes,” says Pellegrino. “We believe that it should bring us at least 20 percent improvement in our efficiency and also bring more value to the business.”

Partners

Oracle Customer Success Services helped Nokia implement Oracle Fusion Cloud HCM and provided guidance to help Nokia employees understand the application. “CSS’s commitment to be successful together was the key criteria for us to select them as our partner for implementation,” says Pellegrino. “We can rely on Oracle for the launch and for a long-term relationship.”
