Database Server

Overview

Exadata Database Machine is the most versatile database platform. The Exadata Database Machine uses powerful database servers, perfect for all situations including OLTP, Analytics, Consolidation, Virtualization, horizontally scalable workloads, high-end OLTP workloads, large scale consolidation of databases, memory intensive workloads, and multi-rack data warehouses.

Using a scale-out architecture for the database server allows expansion from small to extremely large configurations to accommodate workloads of any size. Exadata X11M introduces the Database Server-Z, which is equipped with a single 32-core x86 processor and 768 GB of DDR5 memory (expandable up to 1.125 TB) providing customers with the choice of database servers to match their workload requirements. The minimal configuration of an Exadata Database Machine consists of two database servers and three storage servers, which can be elastically expanded by adding more database and/or storage servers within the same rack. Elastic configurations provide a flexible and efficient mechanism to meet any size business need.

A single rack configuration of Exadata Database Machine X11M can achieve up to 25.2 Million 8K database read1 I/O operations per second (IOPS) workloads. For data warehouse environments that require the highest performance, Exadata X11M Extreme Flash storage servers are capable of scanning up to 500 GB/s per server for a total of 8.5 TB/s2 scan throughput from a single rack configuration. These are real-world end-to-end performance figures measured running SQL workloads with standard 8K database I/O sizes inside a single rack Exadata system, unlike storage vendor performance figures based on small I/O sizes and low-level I/O tools and are therefore many times higher than can be achieved from realistic SQL workloads. Exadata's performance on real database workloads is orders of magnitude faster than traditional storage array architectures, and is also much faster than current all-flash storage arrays, whose architecture bottlenecks on flash throughput. Exadata X11M uses a combination of scale-out storage, RDMA over Converged Ethernet networking, database offload, Exadata RDMA memory accelerator, and PCIe Flash to deliver extremely high performance from memory and flash.
