Visitors to Pompeii park dig Oracle Cloud-based app
Archaeological Park of Pompeii taps Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Oracle Autonomous Database to manage visitors, allowing the site to reopen after COVID.
“Reopening the Pompeii site to tourists after lockdown was tough. With Oracle’s help, we delivered the cloud native mobile solution in just six weeks.”
Business challenges
The Archaeological Park of Pompeii, near Naples in southern Italy, features the ruins of an ancient Roman port town destroyed in 79 AD by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The mission of the park, run by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, is to preserve and promote public use of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In a typical year, some 3 million people visit the site, at which about 500 buildings “frozen in time” are open to the public. But 2020 was no typical year.
Following the national lockdown in March 2020 due to COVID-19, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii needed to build an application to track visitors’ movements within the park’s 44 square kilometers in order to ensure social distancing.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Oracle Consulting were instrumental in reopening our doors to tourists. With Oracle's technology, we are well-equipped to enhance and preserve tourism within the local area.
Why Archaeological Park of Pompeii Chose Oracle
The Archaeological Park of Pompeii chose to build its application on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Oracle Autonomous Database because of their comprehensive cloud native and DevOps capabilities. To build the app, the park chose Oracle Consulting for its superior customer service.
Results
Launched on the Google Play Store and Apple Store in July 2020, the MyPompeii app has been downloaded by more than 20,000 visitors. Tourists can access the app by scanning the QR code on tickets purchased on the TicketOne platform.
Once logged into the mobile app, visitors can tour the park viewing a real-time heat map that shows the number of other individuals present along any route. Once logged into the mobile app, visitors can tour the park viewing a real-time heat map that shows the number of other individuals present along any route enabled by Oracle Spatial.
Meantime, park officials accessing the app—enabled by Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s Blockchain, OCI Functions, API Gateway, OCI Kubernetes Engine (OKE), Container Registry, Notifications, Oracle Spatial, and Autonomous Transaction Processing—are able to track the movements of visitors in real time and redirect them to minimize congestion in popular areas, averting high-risk situations.
The app supplements other safety initiatives the park instituted to allow it to reopen during COVID-19. MyPompeii also helps tourists visualize all points of interest, get additional information, and find first aid stations, restrooms, refreshment stands, and other facilities.
