Rotary improves humanitarian efforts using Oracle Cloud
Rotary scales its grant application system on Oracle Cloud, meeting spikes in demand for its 1.2 million members worldwide.
“When we look at where Oracle’s vision is and what Oracle’s strategy is, then we look at what our vision is and what our strategy is, there is a synergy between the two.”
Business challenges
Rotary International is a global service organization that for more than a century has united business and professional leaders behind a wide range of humanitarian causes, including the eradication of polio, COVID-19, and other diseases and illnesses; the improvement of living conditions; the awarding of youth scholarships; and the advancement of literacy. Its original members in Chicago chose the name Rotary because they rotated their weekly meetings among one another's offices. Today, the organization has more than 35,000 “clubs” worldwide with 1.2 million members.
With only a small IT staff, Rotary sought both a full-function cloud platform and an experienced technology partner. First order of business: Migrate its resource-starved grant application system to the cloud.
Why Rotary chose Oracle
Results
In lieu of private cloud maintenance, Rotary turned to Oracle’s expansive public cloud services to help modernize its varied operations and extend its outreach to new constituents.
In early 2020, Rotary partnered with Oracle Consulting to complete a “lift-and-shift” or cloud migration of its on-premises PeopleSoft application footprint to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure with Disaster Recovery, which required a PCI-compliant cloud to enable staff to continue using their credit cards. The migration has already helped stabilize Rotary’s most important financial toolset, its grant application system, through the use of Oracle Cloud’s scalable compute and storage instances.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure allowed Rotary to scale with spikes in demand from its events, global disasters, or other factors. And as a midsize organization, it preferred to tap Oracle’s infrastructure expertise rather than have to hire engineers on its own. It plans to use that headcount for other technical roles.
Now Rotary is preparing to implement Oracle Cloud ERP financial applications along with the Oracle Cloud CX Service suite of customer-facing apps by the end of 2020. “This is going to be the game-changer,” says CIO Faiz Hanif.
