Oracle Autonomous Database is a cornerstone of the daily operations of Visy and our customers. It is the embedded source of Visy Access Gate applications in managing millions of recognition events and permission requests each day, ensuring safe and secure movement of people, traffic, and cargo.

Business challenges

Visy, based in Tampere, Finland, develops gate-automation and access-control systems for use in three main sectors: ports and container terminals; intermodal and rail operations; and industrial facilities and logistics hubs. Its systems are critical to ensuring that customers can track all cargo, vehicles, and people in a designated area and automate their safe movement.

The data collected by its Access Gate application requires massive storage and compute capacity. Visy wanted to move these workloads from an on-premises environment to the cloud in order to improve scalability, reduce infrastructure costs, and enable its solution to be more economically viable for new customers. Additionally, Visy wanted to reduce developer testing and deployment times.

As a growing ISV, the company also needed to spend less time on database administration and maintenance so that it could focus more on its core business. “We needed a partner with a cloud database that is simple to use, maintain, and integrate,” says Visy CEO Petri Granroth.

Why Visy Chose Oracle

Visy evaluated solutions from Oracle, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and other vendors, choosing Oracle Autonomous Database mainly for its superior price-performance.

“The performance was clearly the best, and we did not want any bottlenecks to our solutions,” Granroth says. “There are few other cloud options on the market that could meet our needs. Finnish cloud providers were too local, in our opinion, and thus a global, scalable solution by Oracle was an easy choice.”

Results

By implementing Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing and Oracle Visual Builder on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Visy has accelerated development and testing of its Access Gate. The Oracle implementation has enabled it to reach the production phase for new customers much faster, ensuring rapid project turnarounds and increasing its competitiveness.

Visy also deployed Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s easily scalable block storage and compute capacity for Access Gate, which currently processes more than a million mission-critical events per day, helping customers keep cargo and people moving safely and securely.

Moving its business-critical application to Oracle Cloud from an on-premises environment also has facilitated Visy’s application upgrades and enhancements, and enabled its engineers to focus on system development instead of administration. “It’s not our core business to administer and maintain databases,” says Senior Software Developer Petri Sarpola. “With Oracle Autonomous Database we are able to concentrate on our strengths.”

The Oracle Cloud solution has also increased system reliability and security, critical factors for Visy’s customers.

With its core application now running on Oracle Cloud, Visy’s Access Gate deployments are much easier and more cost-effective, particularly for small businesses that don’t have an IT department or the resources to buy and maintain their own hardware, helping the company expand its customer base. “In the beginning we planned to provide the new service to small-scale customers that cannot afford dedicated servers,” Granroth says. “However, in the future, we believe this is also the correct path for larger-scale customers.”

Always being up to date on the most advanced Oracle Database delivers the best software performance and user experience for Visy engineers and customers. It also helps Visy fully leverage the value of its data.

“Data is the air we breathe at Visy,” Kujala says. “We exist because our customers have processes where recognition and identifying are required. With our vision technology products and Oracle Autonomous Database, we collect, store, and utilize a tremendous amount of data that enables us to provide innovative and practical solutions.”
