Oracle IAM supports our changing needs. It’s a more efficient system than the one it replaced years ago. Our previous system was just out of date, slow, and clunky. In 2020, our upgrade to OIG 12c from OIM 11g was driven by maintaining the currency of the product and to give us the flexibility we need as our team continues to map out the future of identity at the university.

Business challenges

The University of Melbourne is regarded as Australia’s leading university. Its IT organization supports some 54,000 equivalent full-time student load students, 9,200 full-time equivalent staff, and more than 430,000 alumni.

As a thriving university, students and staff need access to a variety of applications.  Account provisioning is a key function in ensuring that identities and access to applications are managed efficiently, meet the university security standards, and provide the right access according to each user’s department and resource needs. To support its overall security and compliance needs, the university must have visibility into where the students and the staff access systems.

The university’s enterprise platform services team recognized that due to resource constraints, a dedicated project team could not be assigned to the upgrade. The University of Melbourne decided to tackle the project internally using its operations team, with the support of partner Delivery Centric.

While the school’s main use case for Oracle Identity and Access Management is provisioning accounts for staff and students, the university looks forward to innovating by adding more granular access for staff and student groups through future roadmap initiatives. The upgrade also allowed the team to continue to use self-service capabilities like password resets through a custom interface, backed by Oracle Identity Governance.

From a security perspective it was important for us to make sure our identity solution was on a supported version so that we could continue to use our custom workflows and code.

Why The University of Melbourne Chose Oracle

Because of its established relationship with Oracle, the University of Melbourne chose to continue using Oracle Identity and Access Management. The university elected to upgrade to Oracle IAM 12c to ensure continuity of operations and capabilities.

That upgrade was the starting point that will allow it to kick off future innovation to improve student and staff experiences.

Results

Deploying Oracle’s best practices at every step ensured the project was successful while everyone was working remotely. In addition, the upgrade to Oracle IAM 12c had no adverse impact on daily activities or student and faculty collaboration.

The team took a phased approach to the upgrade, creating a repeatable model for successful upgrades and projects. The university was also able to successfully retest the implementation with existing integrations, which included Google Suite, Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle Unified Directory, Active Directory and their Student Portal. Now, the university can take advantage of Oracle IAM’s latest features and move closer to achieving real-time capabilities for account provisioning.
