Minor Subject:Tampering HTML request headers could lead to an elevation of privileges

This threat exists when a request header is spoofed and a servlet gets environment variables that were set based on this header.

Severity: Medium

An attacker may be able to gain access to protected resources.

A problem was identified that could potentially cause a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Server. Patches and upgrades are available to correct this problem (see Section II). Oracle treats potential security problems with a high degree of urgency and endeavors to take appropriate steps to help ensure the security of our customers' systems. As a result, Oracle strongly suggests the following actions:

I. Advisory

An attacker can spoof certain information in a request header that can lead to possibly getting access to application servlets that rely on this information for authentication.

This advisory corrects this issue by ensuring that the header information is properly handled before passing it to the servlet.

The following versions of WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express are affected by this vulnerability

  • WebLogic Server 10.0 on all platforms
  • WebLogic 9.2 released through 9.2 Maintenance Pack 1, on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server 9.1 on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server 9.0 on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server 8.1 released through Service Pack 6, on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server 7.0 released through Service Pack 7, on all platforms
  • WebLogic Server 6.1 released through Service Pack 7, on all platforms

Oracle strongly recommends the following course of actions.

WebLogic Server 10.0

  1. Upgrade to WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 10.0 Maintenance Pack 1.

WebLogic Server 9.2

  1. Upgrade to WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 9.2 Maintenance Pack 2.

    WebLogic Server 9.0

    1. Download and apply the 9.0 GA Combo patch #7824963 from OracleMetaLink as per the instructions below:
      1. Select the Patches and Updates tab after logging in to OracleMetaLink.
      2. Click Simple Search.
      3. In the Search By field, select Patch Number from the list.
      4. Enter the patch number. The patch number may be different for different product releases and platforms.
      5. Select the platform (or choose generic as applicable)
      6. Click Go.
      7. Click Download to download the patch.
    2. Download and apply the patch #7825046 from OracleMetaLink as per the instructions below:
      1. Select the Patches and Updates tab after logging in to OracleMetaLink.
      2. Click Simple Search.
      3. In the Search By field, select Patch Number from the list.
      4. Enter the patch number. The patch number may be different for different product releases and platforms.
      5. Select the platform (or choose generic as applicable)
      6. Click Go.
      7. Click Download to download the patch.
    3. Place the jar for the patch at the end of the PATCH_CLASSPATH.

    WebLogic Server 8.1

    1. Upgrade to WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 8.1 Service Pack 6.
    2. Download and apply the patch #7824993 from OracleMetaLink as per the instructions below:
      1. Select the Patches and Updates tab after logging in to OracleMetaLink.
      2. Click Simple Search.
      3. In the Search By field, select Patch Number from the list.
      4. Enter the patch number. The patch number may be different for different product releases and platforms.
      5. Select the platform (or choose generic as applicable)
      6. Click Go.
      7. Click Download to download the patch.
    3. Place the jar for the patch in the CLASSPATH before the weblogic.jar file.

    WebLogic Server 7.0

    1. Upgrade to WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 7.0 Service Pack 7
    2. Download and apply the patch #7825062 from OracleMetaLink as per the instructions below:
      1. Select the Patches and Updates tab after logging in to OracleMetaLink.
      2. Click Simple Search.
      3. In the Search By field, select Patch Number from the list.
      4. Enter the patch number. The patch number may be different for different product releases and platforms.
      5. Select the platform (or choose generic as applicable)
      6. Click Go.
      7. Click Download to download the patch.
    3. Place the jar for the patch in the CLASSPATH before the weblogic.jar file.

    WebLogic Server 6.1

    1. Upgrade to WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 6.1 Service Pack 7.
    2. Download and apply the patch #7825055 from OracleMetaLink as per the instructions below:
      1. Select the Patches and Updates tab after logging in to OracleMetaLink.
      2. Click Simple Search.
      3. In the Search By field, select Patch Number from the list.
      4. Enter the patch number. The patch number may be different for different product releases and platforms.
      5. Select the platform (or choose generic as applicable)
      6. Click Go.
      7. Click Download to download the patch.
    3. Place the jar for the patch in the CLASSPATH before the weblogic.jar file.
