Planning a Work Package

Work packages are assigned to WBS nodes to track how the work will be completed. Work packages are used to track costs and hours of related scope items and P6 activity dates (via Primavera Gateway).

Progress at the work package level is captured based on the scope percent complete weight method (either cost, quantity, or hours) of the scope items assigned and the activity percent complete. The scope percent complete weight is calculated for each scope assignment as the baseline value (cost, quantity, or hour) * percent complete. The sum of the weight values is then divided by the sum of the baseline values to calculate Scope Percent Complete. The percent complete can be displayed as a column on the Work Package page.

Progress of scope items assigned to a work package is captured after creating a new work package and a baseline is set. (This is separate from Work Package Percent Complete described above.) There are two progress measure methods available to determine how progress is calculated for each scope assignment.

A work package with no scope assignments or P6 activities can be used as a placeholder for planning purposes. Data such as estimate cost, hours, and start dates can be assigned. Other information such as documents and codes can also be added for the work package.

In this topic, you will create a work package.
