Page Menu: This is when a List View is displayed on a page (not a Springboard). The menu is often displayed on a home page. Commonly used for phone apps.
Popup Menu: This is when a List View is displayed in a popup. The popup menu is triggered by a button or icon in a header or footer. Commonly used for tablet apps.

Appearance

Appearance characteristics for this pattern.

Icon: It is common to display an icon representing the navigation item on the left of a list item label.
Label: The list item will always have a label.
Elements: Count bubbles, carets, description text, and other elements can be displayed in the list item.

Trigger: A button or icon in a header or footer opens and closes the popup menu. The menu icon can be part of a toolbar.
Background: The page beneath the popup can be dimmed while the popup is open, but it is not required to be dimmed.
Title: The title of the popup should indicate the context of the menu.
Icon: It is common to display an icon representing the navigation item on the left of a list item label.
Label: The list item will always have a label.
Elements: Count bubbles, carets, description text, and other elements can be displayed in the list item.
Button Menu: A common, but less elegant display is to use a set of buttons in a grid, similar to an action sheet.
Scroll Bar: A vertical scroll bar may be displayed on the right edge of the popup, if the content is longer than the fixed size of the popup.
Popup Arrow: An arrow can point to the trigger that launched the menu. This requires custom implementation in MAF.

Behavior

Common behaviors for this pattern.

Selecting Item: Tapping a menu item will perform the menu action, usually navigating to the appropriate page.
Scroll: The user may swipe or flick to scroll vertically. Dragging upward will slide content up, while dragging downward will slide content down.

Trigger: Tapping the trigger button or icon will open the menu, or will close the menu if already open.
Position: When the popup opens it should be anchored near the button or icon that opened it.
Auto-Dismiss: Tapping outside the popup will close the popup, if auto-dismiss is set.
Selecting Item: Tapping a menu item will close the popup, and will perform the menu action, usually navigating to the appropriate page.
Scroll: The user may swipe or flick to scroll vertically. Dragging upward will slide content up, while dragging downward will slide content down.

Usage guidelines for this pattern.

The Navigation Menu can be used instead of a Panel Splitter. The master list can appear in the menu popup, while the details can appear on the main application page.
It is not recommended to use a Navigation Menu with other navigation options such as Navigation Bar or Springboard.
Scrolling is not recommended for a Navigation Menus, but if it is needed for the application, keep the scrolling to two or three screen folds. Avoid horizontal scrolling.
Do not use cascading menus or sections that collapse or expand in the menu.
Child menu items may be displayed indented under the parent menu item.
