Zero Data Loss Autonomous Recovery Service Features

Continuous protection and fast recovery

Real-time transaction protection and recoverability status

Continuous protection reduces RPO

Continuous protection reduces RPOs

Oracle Database transactions are sent to Recovery Service in real time, reducing potential data loss and cutting recovery point objectives (RPOs) from between 15 minutes and two hours to less than one second.

Fast, predictable restores decrease downtime

Automated recoveries on database services are completed quickly and reliably using virtual full backups created by Recovery Service. Eliminating the need to separately restore and apply multiple incremental backups lowers recovery time objectives and makes recovery times predictable.

Backup validation improves recoverability

Database-aware validation of backups by Recovery Service confirms that protected databases can be successfully recovered and that all files needed for point-in-time recovery are available.

Real-time recoverability status simplifies administration

Recoverability goals and status are always available for all protected databases, including any potential data loss and how far into the past you can recover a database, increasing confidence that critical databases can be recovered when needed.

Enterprise-proven technology reduces risk

Built on the proven technology foundation of Oracle’s Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance, Recovery Service adds end-to-end cloud automation for ease of use and cloud economics that make higher availability and resiliency available for any size organization or budget.

Ransomware resiliency

Fully recover protected databases—without data loss

Ransomware resiliency

Zero data loss protection enables point-in-time recovery

Ongoing transactions for each protected database are automatically sent to Recovery Service in real time, enabling RPOs with less than one second of potential data loss and the ability to recover to any point in time prior to a cyberattack or issue that compromised the production database.

Enforced backup encryption provides high security

Backup encryption is enforced for all protected databases, providing increased security by rendering backups unusable without the encryption keys—which are never stored on Recovery Service.

Database-aware validation protects against attacks

Identifying an inconsistent backup is key to uncovering malware or ransomware attacks. Recovery Service checks all incoming backups for Oracle block correctness, allowing administrators to immediately quarantine systems and conduct further investigations.

Built-in safeguards against accidental or malicious deletion

Recovery Service has a 14-day minimum recovery that can be extended to 95 days. Backups can’t be arbitrarily deleted, and if a protected database is deleted its backups will be retained for a minimum of 72 hours, providing a buffer period that allows the database to be recovered in the event of accidental deletion.

Retention lock policy enforces immutability of backups

Address strict backup immutability requirements using protection policies with retention lock to guard backups, from creation to end of their retention period, eliminating any possibility of early deletion, even by a privileged user.

Separation of duties improves backup access security

Recovery Service is logically and physically separated from the Oracle Database services it protects, with access to it controlled via strict separation of duties between database administrator (DBA) and recovery service administrator roles. Users with DBA privileges for a protected database may initiate backup and recovery operations while the Recovery Service administrator manages all backup and recovery policies, monitors backup usage, recovery status, and alerts.

Cloud simplicity

Cloud automation reduces data protection complexities

Save time and money with lower database consumption

Cloud automation makes database backups easy

Configure automatic backups and optionally enable real-time data protection for continuous transaction protection in less than five clicks.

Automation takes the guesswork out of recovery

Recovery is easy; simply choose the desired recovery point, such as the latest point possible, a user-specified time, or user-selected system change number (SCN), and click to restore the database.

Oracle Metrics Explorer integration provides broader operational insights

Enhanced backup metrics and full integration with cloud automation and the OCI database management console enable customers to view all operational aspects and metrics of their database ecosystem from production to protection.

Centralized backup administration simplifies management

Easily manage backups for all your databases running on Exadata Database Service, Autonomous Database—Dedicated, Base Database Service, Oracle Database@Azure, and Oracle Database@Google Cloud. A unified dashboard allows you to view current recoverability status, backup space usage, and the protection policy for all protected databases, with the ability to drill down further by database on the database properties page.

Proactive recovery alert notifications reduce risk

Receive alerts on recoverability, such as if data loss exposure is outside of your alert thresholds, putting service-level agreements (SLAs) at risk.

Automation reduces human errors

Automated database protection, validation, and recovery of customer databases eliminate many human errors, greatly reducing the likelihood that DBAs would need to resort to manual recovery.

Operational efficiency

Save time and money with lower database consumption

Save time and money with lower database consumption

Incremental forever backups minimize overhead on production databases

Automated incremental-forever backups are fast and eliminate the need for weekly full database backups on production databases.

Validation offload increases operational efficiency

Optimizations with Oracle Database, including offloading of backup validation processes to Recovery Service, reduce overhead on the database service so your production databases run at the highest possible performance without resource constraints caused by backup processes.

Fast, predictable recoveries reduce downtime

Recovery Service automatically generates a virtual full backup at the start of the recovery process, enabling faster and more predictable recoveries compared to traditional approaches that require restoration of a full backup followed by the restore and apply of incremental backups.

Consistency improves data governance

Standardizing database backups with automatic protection and policy-based recovery management provides consistent governance throughout their lifecycle.

Choice of subscriptions reduces cost for lower-tier databases

For databases with less-stringent SLAs, customers can minimize costs by using Oracle Database Autonomous Recovery Service, which includes all capabilities of Oracle Database Zero Data Loss Autonomous Recovery Service except real-time data protection.
